  • Canada and India celebrate
    Commonwealth relations


    Ms. Shivani Wazir Pasrich, Chairperson of Commonwealth Society of India and Asia Representative of Royal Commonwealth Society; and Mr. Jess Dutton, Acting High Commissioner for Canada to India jointly hosted a dinner reception in New Delhi on September 13th, 2016, in honour of the visiting delegation of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association of Canada.

    The visiting delegation included: Ms. Yasmin Ratansi, Member of Parliament and Chair of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association of Canada; Senator Joan Fraser; Senator Salma Ataullahjan; Mr. Ramesh Sangha, Member of Parliament; Ms. Irene Mathyssen, Member of Parliament and Ms. Elizabeth Kingston.

    Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Dutton said, “Multilateral fora, such as the Commonwealth, not only offer an important platform for Canada and India to advance our shared objectives in the bilateral relationship but also on global challenges, such as promoting democracy, climate change, human rights and rule of law. This visit by the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association of Canada will further help to advance these common goals.”

    Ms. Shivani Wazir Pasrich said in her remarks: “The World needs to come together now more than ever. The Commonwealth can be a beacon of goodness that generates platforms to celebrate enduring values of inclusiveness and democracy.”

    Ms. Yasmin Ratansi, His Holiness the Gyalwang Drukpa and Dr. B.K. Modi, founder of the Global Citizen Forum were the other speakers at the event.

    The evening began with a musical tribute to the Commonwealth sung by Ameera. She was accompanied by musicians Aleixo and Edwin on the keyboard and guitar. This was followed by a poem on women’s empowerment and a song on mutual respect and collaboration. A fusion dance and musical performance choreographed by Aniruddha Das and performed by Shivani Wazir Pasrich concluded the event.
